When last I spoke with author Madison Lawson, she was telling us about her thriller, The Registration. (You can check out that interview here.) Now I’m sitting down to chat with her about the sequel, The Registration Rewritten, along with a special edition of The Registration.
Tell us a bit about The Registration Rewritten?
The Registration Rewritten is the sequel to my debut novel, The Registration. In it, Lynell has found herself in a brand new role as heir and leader of the Registration, the very system that aimed to kill her. She must convince the Registration committee and the country’s oligarchs that she can fill her uncle’s shoes, while also proving to the country’s largest rebel group that she’s nothing like him—ruthless and greedy. When Sawyer, the leader of the Resurrection, reaches out with proof that they are both on the hitlist of powerful people who wish to destroy the rebels and take over the Registration, the two women form an uneasy alliance.
With mere days until the committee announces a policy change that will increase the Registration’s lethal power, Lynell and Sawyer must find out who wants them dead—and all signs point so someone close.
How was writing the sequel to The Registration similar or different than writing the first book?
It was incredibly different and MUCH harder. I didn’t write The Registration with a sequel in mind, so I unknowingly closed a lot of windows and doors in that book. While working on Rewritten I’d often write something or come up with an idea only to check The Registration and learn it would work for continuity purposes.
For most of my books, The Registration included, I go where the story takes me and let the characters do what they want. For this one, the story and the characters needed a lot more guidance. I couldn’t rely on a simple “survive” narrative - not when there’s so much more at play now. I had to ensure that I stayed true to the heart of the story while still providing the excitement, heart-pounding suspense, and adventure that readers loved so much about the first book. It was a delicate balance that took quite a lot of work, but I’m really happy with how it turned out.
We meet so many more characters and dig into the political, legal, and societal aspects of a system like the Registration that I just didn’t have space for in book 1.
The world is bigger, the characters are smarter, and the stakes are so much higher.
Any tips for writers creating a book series?
First and foremost, know you’re writing a series before you start, and keep that in mind. Take lots of notes while you’re planning and writing the first book and leave doors open where you can. Also, if you can, know where the full overarching series is going to end before you start, because that’ll help guide you through each book.
And whether it’s a series or not, get to know your characters. Flush out their personalities and families and backstories even if that information isn’t going to be in the book. Readers can tell when you know your characters.
Will there be more books in the series?
Yes. There will be at least 1 more, though it doesn’t have an estimated release date right now.
I hear there is a special edition of The Registration! What makes it a special edition?
We had a completely new cover designed, complete with a dust jacket, end papers, and sprayed edges. There’s also a bonus chapter told from Zach’s point of view that I LOVE, and I hope readers like it too.
What was your process for creating a special edition?
It was a simple process! I worked with my friend Dana Claire and her company Inkfluence (https://theinkfluence.com/) to have it designed. I sent them some favorite covers and aspects of the book, etc., and they designed it then asked for feedback. I LOVED what they did, seriously.
Where can readers order the special edition and The Registration Rewritten?
Readers can read more about the special edition and order it here!
Is there a discount code for the special edition?
Yes! Right now, the next ~50 people can get the special edition for $10 off. The cost is already discounted on the link on my website and will be changed when the discount is no longer available.
